PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION
The main purpose of the Professional Training and Certification Committee is to assure the public, the school systems and their governing bodies that the persons holding TASBO certification have acquired levels of skills and knowledge required to perform their jobs in a professional manner. The major goals of the certification program are to promote (1) necessary skills for excellent job performance, (2) assist with maintaining required competencies, (3) encourage self-regulation and a high code of ethics, (4) provide professional recognition, (5) improve educational standards, and (6) enhance organizational status.
The committee is responsible for developing. implementing and managing training activities that will enable members to reach their desired certifications in TASBO. Certification programs provide staff development activities that keep members abreast of the necessary competencies and skills required for continued professional success in the field of school business.

Certification Areas
- Certified School Business Specialist (Level I, II, III)
Certified School Business Specialist include positions requiring technical skills and knowledge. Position responsibilities are basically focused on one specific function. Examples include but are not limited to: payroll, benefits, secretarial, accounts payable/receivable, budget, purchasing, personnel, insurance, community relations, etc. Typical job titles include but are not limited to specialist, clerk, secretary, junior accountant, auditor bookkeeper, technical, analyst, etc.
- Certified School Business Official (Level I, II, III)
Certified School Business Officials include positions requiring technical knowledge and management skills. Position responsibilities cover more than one business or support services function and/or the supervision of a group of employees. Typical job titles include but are not limited to: supervisor, coordinator, director, senior accountant and/or auditor, manager, etc.
- Certified School Business Administrator (Level I, II, III)
Certified School Business Administrators include positions requiring management and leadership skills. Position responsibilities cover two or more major support services functions and include the supervision of employees. Typical job titles include but are not limited to: manager, director, deputy superintendent, assistant superintendent, associate superintendent, etc.
CERTIFICATION STANDARDS
- Certified School Business Specialist
Level I:
- High School Diploma or GED w/minimum of 3 business related courses
- 1 year of TASBO membership
- 1 year of school business related experience
- $10 application fee
- 30 hours training every 3 years for renewal
Level II:
- Associate Degree or 60 semester hours of college work w/minimum of 9 hours in business related courses or 1 year and 4 months of school business related experience
- 3 years of TASBO membership
- 3 years of school business related experience beyond degree equivalent experience $10 application fee
- 30 hours training every 3 years for renewal
Level III:
- Bachelors Degree w/minimum of 12 hours in business related courses or 2 years and 10 months of school business related experience
- 5 years of TASBO membership
- 5 years of school business related experience beyond degree equivalent experience $10 application fee
- 30 hours training every 3 years for renewal
- Certified School Business Official
Level I:
- Associate Degree or 60 semester hours of college work w/minimum of 12 hours in business related courses or 2 years and 7 months of school business related experience
- 1 year of TASBO membership
- 1 year of school business related experience beyond degree related experience
- $20 application fee
- 45 hours training every 3 years for renewal
Level II:
- Bachelors Degree w/minimum of 15 hours in business related courses or 5 years and 6 months of school business related experience
- 3 years of TASBO membership
- 3 years of school business related experience beyond degree equivalent experience $20 application fee
- 45 hours training every 3 years for renewal
Level III:
- Masters Degree w/minimum of 18 hours in business related courses or 7 years and 1 month of school business related experience
- 5 years of TASBO membership
- 5 years of school business related experience beyond degree equivalent experience $20 application fee
- 45 hours training every 3 years for renewal
- Certified School Business Administrator
Level I:
- Bachelors Degree w/minimum of 18 hours in business related courses or 8 years and 4 months of school business related experience
- 1 year of TASBO membership
- 1 year of school business related experience beyond degree related experience
- $30 application fee
- 75 hours training every 3 years for renewal
Level II:
- Masters Degree w/minimum of 21 hours in business related courses or 10 years and 7 months of school business related experience
- 3 years of TASBO membership
- 3 years of school business related experience beyond degree equivalent experience $30 application fee
- 75 hours training every 3 years for renewal
Level III:
- Doctorial Degree w/minimum of 24 hours in business related courses or 13 years of school business related experience
- 5 years of TASBO membership 5 years of school business related experience beyond degree equivalent experience
- $30 application fee
- 75 hours training every 3 years for renewal
CERTIFICATION PROCEDURES
Initial Certification
- Submit Certification Application
- Committee reviews application
- Committee recommends applicants for certification to Board of Directors
- Standards and Certification Committee notifies applicant
- Certificate good for three (3) years
Renewal Certification
- Submit Certification Application
- Committee reviews application
- Committee approves applicants for renewal certification
- Standards and Certification Committee notifies applicant
- Certificate good for three (3) years
Upgrading Certification
- Submit Upgrade Application
- Committee reviews application
- Committee recommends applicants for upgrade to Board of Directors
- Standards and Certification Committee notifies applicant
- Certificate good for three (3) years
General Certification Requirements Information
- TASBO membership is required to maintain certification
- Three (3) year renewal fees are the same as the application fee for each respective certification area and level
- Courses for initial certification are defined as college courses meeting for 45 contact hours each or 3-quarter hours of credit each with the exception of courses taken in high school
- High school courses are required for the Specialist area at Level I are defined as 1 Carnegie unit of each credit
