PLATINUM LEVEL GOLD LEVEL SILVER LEVEL BRONZE LEVEL SPONSOR WWW.TASBO.NETThe website is an excellent resource that contains information on various aspects of the organization, so visit it often. Below is a list of items found on the website. About TASBO – History I would like to take a moment to publicly recognize and commend Art Stauffer, Buyer, Shelby County Schools, for his dedication and hard work as the resident Webmaster for TASBO. I think you will agree that his creative and technical skills provide our organization with an excellent communications medium. Please let us know if you have any suggestions for improvement. Contact us at janderson@scs.k12.tn.us. Conference One - Day Focus on School Bookkeepers - Success and EvolutionSeveral conferences ago, a group of TASBO members and the Board began talking about how TASBO could better recognize school bookkeepers and other support personnel, with annual professional development. With this mission in mind, it was decided to restructure Thursday at conference and “Take It Up Another Notch” and “Bam" – INSTANT SUCCESS! We all know the importance of school personnel in our operations, but success sometimes has its own challenges. In this case it is space and logistics. In order for TASBO to continue to meet the needs of the school business officials, as well as these invaluable personnel, plans are being made to concentrate professional development for this group through enhanced Drive-In Workshops across the state. Check the website periodically for more information on these workshops. This program change will make it possible to utilize both Wednesday and Thursday for interest sessions on the many issues facing school business officials today. Of course, school bookkeepers and other support personnel will always be welcome to participate at any annual conference. First Annual SASBO Leadership SummitPresident-Elect Diane Frank, State SASBO Director Roger Underwood and I represented TASBO at the First Annual SASBO Leadership Summit on January 13 – 15 in Mobile, site of the 2005 SASBO Conference. American Fidelity presented an excellent interactive instructional program on leadership. We hope to have a few vendors provide the same services at our conference this year, without a sales pitch! Vendors, like schools, are having to do more with less. A management track from the corporate world on new procedures and considerations for more efficient financial management may be beneficial to school operations. An interesting session at the Summit was a State Showcase Round Table that covered such topics as increasing membership and conference participation, leaders and mentoring, certification programs, communications and networking, recognition of accomplishments and increasing vendor participation. Participants spent about twenty minutes at each table hearing and sharing ideas. We discovered that some states outsource their conference planning completely for a hefty fee. Unisource, a well known vendor, incorporated a presentation entitled "Generation X and Y: How to Market the Next Generation of Leaders and Teachers" during dinner the last night. It was a thought provoking topic and one we need to think more about in our daily work places and perhaps in future conference planning. Constitution and BylawsBylaws Chairperson Chris Henson has been asked to review and make recommendations for needed changes to TASBO Bylaws. Of course, these changes must be approved by the Board and will then be introduced at the annual conference business meeting for membership final approval. TASBO Drive-In WorkshopsLast year’s TASBO Drive-In Workshop was a great success in Middle Tennessee. This year, the workshops were held at Metro's McGavock High School and Antioch High School in Nashville. We would like to thank the staff at both of these schools for their gracious hospitality. We were glad to meet with our principals and school bookkeepers from Middle Tennessee. Watch for additional area TASBO Drive-In Workshop announcements in future Newsletters and on our website under Calendar of Events. Training and CertificationThe Training and Certification Committee usually meets prior to each quarterly board meeting to review new, upgrade and renewal applications from our membership. We encourage members to seek certification within TASBO because it continues to add value for our members. Some school systems recognize certified members with additional monetary incentives. The Board will continue to do the same by hosting the Certification Breakfast, offering a registration discount, as well as looking for other options in the future. Please refer to the newly revised TASBO Certification Program Application on www.tasbo.net. The Best for Last: 39th Annual Conference and Exhibits - MemphisIf you haven’t been to a conference in a few years, this conference is a must! As you have probably guessed by now, our theme is Reach for the Stars. Start making your plans now to attend the 39th Annual TASBO Conference and Exhibits, November 29 – December 2, 2005, Peabody Hotel - Memphis! The hotel has been completely renovated, but the famous Peabody Ducks still make their grand entrance and exit from the beautiful hotel lobby fountain promptly at 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily. The hotel is a shining star on the Memphis scene, along with others like the new FEDEX FORUM - home of the Grizzles professional basketball team, AUTOZONE PARK - home of the Red Birds professional minor league baseball team, and those ageless stars like Beale Street Entertainment District, National Civil Rights Museum, Peabody Place Museum, Peabody Place Entertainment & Retail Center, Center for Southern Folklore and Café, Memphis Rock’n Soul Museum and Viking Culinary Arts Center and Retail Store to name a few. Most are in walking distance of the hotel. A dynamic, informative program is being developed by President-Elect Diane Frank to ensure you receive the latest important updates from the state department, as well as an array of other new information that is important in managing school business operations. The pre-conference workshop will definitely be a great jump start to conference so make plans to attend! In a time of so many changes, we are excited to have a locally based company, Team Trek, Inc., present ways to help us meet the new challenges. With a corporate motto of “We Build Leaders and Connect Teams”, they will take us on a journey to new, innovative concepts on how to Reach for the Stars! Refer to www.teamtrek.com for more information about their training and impressive client list. Conference Exhibitor Coordinators, Vice President Maryanne Durski and
Director Colette Arnold, have been working diligently to fill the Tennessee
Exhibit Hall at The Peabody with leading industry stars who will present their
products and services for your consideration. As a way of showing our gratitude,
we’re planning a Breakfast with the Stars: Exhibitors and Sponsors you don’t
want to miss before exhibits officially open. Please refer any interested
vendors in your area to our website, www.tasbo.net, for exhibitor registration information. Vice President Maryanne Durski promises to have more door prizes than ever to
build excitement and fun throughout the conference! If you have any vendors that
would like to donate a door prize let her know. To go along with the conference
theme, Reach for the Stars, we're also looking for door prize donations from
real stars, actors/actresses, singers, writers, politicians, etc. Any assistance
you can provide Maryanne with securing autographed items, like CD's, tapes,
books, photographs, proclamations, personal items, etc., from a real star that
you, a family member or a friend personally know would be appreciated too! |
